Pet play: puppy play, pony play and kitten play, explained

See all

Pet play is role play in which adults take on the character of an animal, most often a puppy, a pony or a kitten, usually with a partner who plays the owner, handler or trainer. Wikipedia calls it animal role play, a form of role play where at least one participant plays a non-human animal. It has nothing to do with real animals; it's about headspace, play, care and power between consenting adults. This page covers what pet play is, its main styles, its history, what research has found, and how people do it safely.

What pet play is

In pet play, one person steps out of their ordinary human role and into an animal one, and another person, if there is one, steps into the role of carer and authority. The animal side gets to be simpler: playful, physical, non-verbal, free of adult responsibilities for a while. The handler side gets to look after, train and direct. That combination of care and control is why pet play sits so comfortably inside BDSM, and why many people who try it describe it as relaxing rather than intense.

Pet play varies hugely. For some it's a sexual dynamic; for others it's mostly social, and a 2026 study in the Journal of Sex Research found that pet players were among the groups most likely not to pair their interest with sex at all. Many people sit in between.

Puppy play

Puppy play is the best-known form today. Researchers Darren Langdridge and Jamie Lawson defined it in the Archives of Sexual Behavior in 2019 as role play in which adults adopt the characteristics of dogs, puppies in particular, while the handler remains human and takes on the role of owner or dominant. Pups often go on all fours and stop speaking, and the most common gear is a hood or mask shaped like a dog's face.

The research on pups is surprisingly positive. The first study, by Liam Wignall and Mark McCormack in 2017, interviewed 30 gay and bisexual men and found that pup play was also a form of relaxation, centred on a distinct headspace; the authors classed it as a kink and found no evidence for framing it as zoophilia. A later survey of 733 pup players, published in 2022, found that 84% believed it improved their general mental health, and half described their play as equally social and sexual. Langdridge and Lawson compared the pup headspace to a physically active form of mindfulness.

Pony play

Pony play is much older as an image. Wikipedia notes it may be depicted in the medieval legend of Phyllis and Aristotle, in which the philosopher is ridden by a woman, a story known from manuscripts as early as 1220 and drawn in a famous woodcut of 1515. In modern fetish art, some of the earliest published pony play images appear in the work of John Willie, whose Bizarre magazine ran through the 1940s and 1950s. Ponies may wear modified horse tack, pull carts, be groomed and shown, and be trained to walk and stand a particular way.

Pony play has a strong femdom tradition: the image of a woman driving or riding her human pony is a direct descendant of that medieval legend. It also has a community of its own, with clubs and events; a 2003 documentary, Pony Passion, was made by a British pony play club.

Kitten play and other animals

Kitten play follows the same pattern with a feline character, and tends to be more playful, independent and teasing than puppy play, which suits people who like a little brattiness. Other animals appear too, but puppies, ponies and kittens cover most of the scene. Whatever the animal, the structure is similar: a character, a handler or owner, rules and rewards, and a headspace that both people protect.

Where pet play comes from

Puppy play's modern form has its roots, according to Lawson and Langdridge, in the gay leather and BDSM subculture of post-war America, most likely in the older role of the "dog slave". They found nothing like it in the 1886 catalogue of sexual interests by Richard von Krafft-Ebing. The scene grew quickly in the 2010s, helped by social media and by a 2016 British TV documentary, Secret Life of the Human Pups, and leather contests began adding pup titles around 2015. One US state leather contest added a pup title in 2015 and renamed it a pet title in 2019.

Gear, safety and negotiation

Gear is optional but popular: the 2022 survey found 90.9% of pup players owned some, most often hoods or masks and collars. Lawson and Langdridge noted it can be very expensive. A few safety points matter:

Trying pet play for the first time

Most people start small. Agree a short scene, perhaps twenty minutes, with a clear beginning and end. Decide the animal, the handler's role, two or three rules and one reward, and agree the non-verbal signal. A collar put on at the start and taken off at the end is a simple way to mark the headspace, and makes it easier to step back into ordinary life afterwards.

Expect it to feel awkward at first; almost everyone does. The headspace that pup players describe tends to arrive with practice, once the self-consciousness wears off. Afterwards, talk about what worked, the same way you would after any scene, and give each other some aftercare. Our aftercare guide explains why that matters even when the play was gentle.

Pet play and femdom

In femdom, pet play usually means a dominant woman as owner or trainer: walking her pup on a lead, training her pony, rewarding a good kitten and correcting a naughty one. The power dynamic is built in, but so is care, which is what many people love about it. It's rarely advertised on cam sites, and in our 5 October 2026 snapshot no dominant performer listed pet play by name, so the strip above shows mistresses who enjoy role play instead. Ask in free chat; plenty will happily play the owner if you explain what you'd like. Agree limits and a signal first, using the limits guide, and if you're still mapping your own interests, the kink list guide will help.

Quick answers

What is pet play?

Role play in which adults take on the character of an animal, usually a puppy, pony or kitten, often with a partner who plays the owner or handler. It's about headspace, play and power, and has nothing to do with real animals.

What is puppy play?

Adults adopting the playful character of a dog, often on all fours and non-verbal, with a handler who looks after and directs them. Many pups describe it as relaxing as much as sexual.

What is pony play?

Dressing as or acting like a horse, sometimes in modified horse tack, and being trained, groomed or shown by a handler. It's one of the oldest forms of animal role play in fetish art.

Is pet play about real animals?

No. Research on pup players found no evidence of any link to zoophilia. Pet play is a human role play between consenting adults.

What is a handler in pet play?

The person who takes the human role: owner, trainer or carer. A handler directs, rewards and looks after the pet, and is responsible for watching for the pet's safe signal.

Is pet play sexual?

Sometimes, sometimes not. Many pet players describe their play as social or relaxing as much as sexual, and research found pet players among the most likely to keep their interest separate from sex.
