What is findom? Financial domination, explained
Findommes and goddesses live now
See allFindom is short for financial domination. It's a fetish in which a submissive gives money or gifts to a dominant, and the giving is the point: not payment for a service, but the act of handing over control of something that matters. The word also names the dominant who receives it. This page covers what findom really is, how it works in practice, what the small amount of research says, and the money, privacy and legal risks you should know before you send anyone a cent.
What findom means
Wikipedia defines financial domination as "a fetish lifestyle in which a financial submissive gifts objects or money to a financial dominant." The receiver is usually a woman, called a findomme, money mistress or simply a findom. The giver is almost always a man, often called a paypig or money slave. Our page on what a paypig is covers that side of the dynamic.
What makes it a fetish rather than a transaction is the absence of anything in return. Wikipedia notes that the submissive has no expectation of sexual contact for the money, and in most cases the two never meet. The thrill is in the surrender: the moment of sending, the knowledge that she has it and he doesn't, and her contempt or approval in response. A 2021 study by McCracken and Brooks-Gordon in Sexuality Research and Social Policy put it plainly: the relationship can be "exclusively psychological".
Where findom came from
Paying a dominant woman is as old as professional domination, but findom as a distinct fetish grew up with the internet. Business Insider traced it back to at least the 1990s in a 2022 history of the scene. The word itself is harder to date: Wiktionary's earliest citation is a Usenet post from 2008, and as late as 2013 Vice was still spelling it "fi-dom". The first academic paper on the subject, a study of what its author called cybershrews and online money masochists, appeared in the journal Deviant Behavior in 2007.
Social media turned a niche into a scene. A 2023 study by Gündüz and colleagues analysed 277,293 tweets using findom hashtags posted between May 2020 and November 2021, and found that trust and enjoyment were the foundations of the relationships people described. Wish-list services, payment apps and clip sites all became part of the economy around it.

How findom works in practice
Most findom is online and long-distance. The common forms:
- Tributes. Money sent with nothing asked in return except her attention, or her disdain.
- Wish lists. Gifts bought from a list she publishes, which keeps the transaction indirect.
- Paid time. On cam sites, private sessions where the spending itself is the theme, and she enjoys watching the meter run.
- Tasks and rules. Spending rules, check-ins and budgets she sets for him, some of them surprisingly sensible.
- Long-term arrangements. Regular tributes over months or years, sometimes with a contract-like set of expectations.
The amounts vary enormously. Vice's 2013 report described subs paying anything from $30 a week to most of their earnings. BuzzFeed News reported in 2022 that one 24-year-old findomme made $34,000 in a single month, $20,000 of it from one client. Those are the headline cases; most findom is far smaller, and the healthy versions are small enough not to hurt.
Who the findommes are
The McCracken and Brooks-Gordon study surveyed 56 findommes, most of them in the UK and the US, and observed 195 more. For 79% of them, findom funded a particular lifestyle they had chosen. The authors placed the practice on a continuum, from lifestyle kink at one end to straightforward commercial work at the other. Plenty of findommes are clear-eyed businesswomen; some are enjoying a dynamic they'd play for free.
That matters for subs, because it tells you what you're buying. A working findomme is offering an experience, and the good ones manage it carefully: they want generous, comfortable regulars, not someone who vanishes after one reckless night.
The risks: money, privacy and blackmail
Findom is the corner of femdom where a bad night can follow you into next month. Three risks deserve plain words.
Overspending. There's no clinical diagnosis for findom, but the psychologist Mark Griffiths has written that in a minority of cases it resembles problem gambling. If you're spending more than you planned, hiding it, or chasing a feeling that keeps getting more expensive, stop for a month and see how it feels.
Privacy. Wish lists and payment apps can reveal more than people expect. In 2023 TechCrunch reported a bug at the wish-list service Throne that exposed creators' home addresses, and from 25 March 2026 Amazon stopped letting list owners hide their shipping details from third-party sellers. Use a PO box or a non-residential address if you run a public list, and never send money from an account in your real name if that matters to you.
Blackmail. "Exposure" fantasy is a recognised kink, but real blackmail is a crime, consensual framing or not. In the UK it carries a maximum sentence of 14 years under the Theft Act 1968; in the US, federal law also makes it a crime. If anyone threatens to share images or details unless you pay, the FTC's advice applies: don't pay, stop replying, keep the evidence and report it.
Payments and platforms
The payment world is wary of findom. PayPal's acceptable use policy bars "certain sexually oriented materials or services", and Venmo's user agreement requires compliance with PayPal's rules. Cash App's merchant policy excludes adult live chat. Academic work published in 2024 describes how card networks, working through payment processors, suppress kink content more broadly. In practice that means accounts get frozen, payments get reversed, and people lose money they thought they'd sent.
Cam sites avoid most of this, because everything runs through the site's own credits and there's a route for disputes. That's the main reason the findom cams page recommends keeping findom inside a regulated site.
Findom and tax
Tributes aren't automatically tax-free gifts. In the US, the Supreme Court held in 1960 that a gift has to come from "detached and disinterested generosity", which is hard to argue for a payment made inside a paid dynamic. For 2026 the IRS annual gift exclusion is $19,000, and any gift tax falls on the giver, not the receiver. People earning from findom should treat it as income and report it; the IRS says gig income must be reported even when no form is issued. In the UK, the trading allowance covers up to £1,000 a year of casual income. This is general information, not tax advice: ask a professional about your own situation.
Doing findom well
The rule that makes findom sustainable is boring and absolute: decide your budget before the scene, never during it. Pick a monthly amount you could lose without noticing, keep it away from rent, bills and borrowed money, and buy credits or set aside the money in advance. A findomme worth your tributes will respect the number, and the best ones will enjoy enforcing it.
If you want to try it, start on a cam site, where the strip at the top of this page shows dominant women live now who list findom or goddess worship. Read the findom cams guide first, and the privacy guide second.
Quick answers
What does findom mean?
Findom is short for financial domination: a fetish in which a submissive gives money or gifts to a dominant, and the giving itself is the turn-on. The word also names the dominant, as in "she's a findom".
What is a findom relationship?
A dynamic built around tributes, usually online and often without the two ever meeting. There's no expectation of sex in return. Some are one-off, some run for years with rules, tasks and regular payments.
Is findom legal?
Giving money you can afford to an adult who wants it is generally legal. Blackmail is not, even when it's dressed up as play: in the UK it carries up to 14 years and in the US federal law also makes it a crime.
Do findom tributes count as gifts for tax?
Not automatically. In the US a gift must come from detached generosity, and any gift tax falls on the giver above $19,000 a year in 2026. People earning from findom generally have income to report. Ask a tax professional.
