A tribute, in Wikipedia's definition, is wealth that one party gives to another as a sign of submission, allegiance or respect. For most of history that meant one state paying another. In financial domination, it means money or a gift a submissive sends to a dominant woman, and it's the ritual at the centre of the whole fetish. This page explains where the word comes from, what a findom tribute is, how much people send, how tributes are paid, the tax question, and how to avoid the scammers who exploit the word.

Tribute meaning

Dictionary.com gives two senses. One is a gift, testimonial or compliment given in acknowledgement of gratitude or esteem, the sense in a tribute concert. The other is a sum paid by one sovereign or state to another in acknowledgement of subjugation, or as the price of peace, security or protection. Wiktionary adds a payment made by a feudal vassal to his lord, and, tellingly, extortion or protection money. Findom lives in the second sense, and does its best to keep well away from the last.

The word comes from the Latin tributum, from tribuere, to assign or allot. It entered English in the mid-14th century as a payment in acknowledgement of submission or as the price of peace, and the gentler gift sense followed by the 1580s.

A word with a long history

Rome's tributum was a tax on citizens to fund the costs of war, and it stopped being levied on them after 167 BC. Medieval England knew tribute as Danegeld: in 991 it paid Viking raiders 10,000 Roman pounds of silver, around 3,300 kilograms, to go away. Historians draw a useful distinction between tribute and tax. Tribute isn't collected in the same regular, routine way, and it requires the payer to recognise their political submission to the payee. It's easy to see why findom borrowed the word: a findom tribute is exactly that, a payment whose real meaning is the acknowledgement of who stands above whom.

What a findom tribute is

In findom, a tribute is money or a gift a submissive sends to a financial dominant, often called a findomme or goddess. It can be a one-off payment, a regular weekly amount, or an item bought from her wish list. The act of sending is the point: the submissive gives up something that matters, and she accepts it, or pointedly doesn't. A 2021 study of findommes by McCracken and Brooks-Gordon described dominants posting humiliation lists of those who failed to offer appropriate levels of financial tribute, which shows how central the ritual is to the dynamic.

Tributes don't buy sex. The same study found no indication that any findomme activities, even one-to-one in real time, included intercourse. What a tribute buys is attention, acknowledgement and the particular thrill of giving. Our guide to what findom is covers the dynamic as a whole, and our page on paypigs covers the givers.

A tribute is a sealed envelope: what matters is the act of handing it over.

How much is a tribute?

There's no standard amount, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Reported figures give a sense of the range. A findomme told Vice in 2013 that some of her regulars sent $20 a week, while drive-by subs would send a new dominant $200 and never contact her again. BuzzFeed News reported in 2022 on a findomme who received roughly $4,000 in birthday tributes and gifts, and on a sub who gave about 10% of his earnings. Dazed noted in 2019 that dominants used to ask for a tribute in exchange for pictures, before social media changed the market.

The only right amount is one you choose before the scene, when you're calm, and can afford without regret the next morning. Write it down. In findom, the fantasy is losing control; the reality should never be.

How tributes are sent

Tributes travel through cam-site tips, wish-list services, payment apps and gift purchases, and each has its own rules and risks; our findom scams guide covers which payment services restrict adult use. On cam sites, tips are simply tokens sent to show appreciation, and payment stays inside the platform, which is the safest arrangement of all.

The scene has a scam problem. BuzzFeed News reported in 2022 that fake financial domination was widespread, and one sub told Dazed he'd been scammed more than 30 times in a single year before he started asking for a verification video before sending any tributes. The US Federal Trade Commission's warning applies directly: only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card and give them the numbers off the back.

Is a tribute a gift?

For tax purposes, not necessarily. In the US, the IRS defines a gift as a transfer where full consideration isn't received in return, and says the giver is generally responsible for any gift tax; the annual exclusion for 2026 is $19,000 per recipient. Tributes paid in exchange for attention, content or a session may not meet that definition, which means they can be income for the recipient, who has to report it like any other earnings. In the UK, small amounts of self-employed income can fall under the £1,000 trading allowance. There's no specific guidance on findom from either tax authority, and none of this is tax advice.

Tribute or extortion?

Wiktionary's oldest darker sense of tribute, protection money, is exactly the line findom must never cross. A tribute is given freely by someone who wants to give it. A payment demanded with threats, such as exposing your identity or images, is blackmail, which carries up to 14 years in prison in the UK and is a federal crime in the US. If that happens, stop paying, keep the evidence and report it; our findom scams guide explains how.

Tributes on cam

Cam sites are the simplest place to explore tributes safely: the performer is verified, payment stays in the site's credits, and you can set your limit before you start. The strip at the top of this page shows findommes and goddesses live now, and our page on findom tasks and menus covers the rituals that often go with tributes.

Quick answers

What does tribute mean?

A payment or gift made as a sign of submission, allegiance or respect. Historically it was what one state paid another in acknowledgement of being subordinate, or as the price of peace and protection.

What is a findom tribute?

Money or a gift a submissive sends to a financial dominant as an act of devotion: a one-off payment, a regular weekly amount, or an item from her wish list. It's the central ritual of financial domination.

How much should a findom tribute be?

There's no standard. Amounts reported in the press range from $20 a week to one-off sends of $200 and more. The right amount is one you set before the scene and can afford without regret.

Is a findom tribute a gift for tax purposes?

Not necessarily. In the US a gift is a transfer where nothing of full value comes back, so tributes paid for attention or content may count as income for the recipient. This isn't tax advice; check with an adviser.

Does a findom tribute buy sex?

No. A 2021 study of findommes found no indication that any of their activities included sex. A tribute buys attention, acknowledgement and the thrill of giving, nothing more.

Is it safe to pay tributes with gift cards?

No. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that only scammers tell you to pay with gift cards. Use platforms that track payments, such as a cam site's own credits.

Why is it called a tribute?

Because the word has always meant a payment that acknowledges submission. From Roman war taxes to the silver England paid Viking raiders, tribute was what the weaker party gave the stronger, which is exactly the feeling findom is built around.

Can I get a tribute back?

Usually not. Voluntary payments are generally final, and wish-list services such as Throne say gifts can't be refunded once ordered. Treat every tribute as gone the moment you send it, and only send what you're happy to lose.
