Facesitting and queening: meaning, history and safety first

Facesitting, Wikipedia explains, is a sexual practice in which one partner sits over the other's face; it's also known as queening. In femdom it's one of the most literal expressions of power there is: she's seated above, he's beneath her, and the position says everything about who's in charge. It also carries one serious risk, and this page puts that risk first. Here you'll find what facesitting and queening mean, where the words come from, the 2014 controversy in the UK, the safety rule that matters most, and how the fantasy works on cam.

Facesitting meaning

The practice is simple to describe without detail: one partner sits or kneels above the other, who lies beneath. In femdom the framing is everything. The woman takes the position of a queen on a throne; the man below becomes, for a while, her seat, her worshipper, or simply the person whose whole world is her. For many submissives the appeal is the overwhelming closeness and the sense of being completely beneath her, which links it to body worship and to the size fantasies of the giantess fetish.

Where queening comes from

Wiktionary defines queening simply as the sexual practice of facesitting. Green's Dictionary of Slang traces the word to gay slang, derived from queenie, and records its earliest citation in 1992, in Brenda Love's Encyclopedia of Unusual Sex Practices. You'll often read that queening refers to a queen sitting on her throne. It's a lovely image and fits femdom perfectly, but there's no evidence that's where the word came from.

Culture and controversy

Facesitting has turned up in surprising places. Monty Python recorded a comic song about it in 1980. Specialist furniture exists too: Wikipedia describes a low queening stool, and also a box-like device that restrains the person beneath by the neck, which adds risk and isn't something this site would recommend.

In 2014 the practice became a political issue in the UK. New regulations applied the country's strictest film-classification rules to online pornography, and facesitting appeared among the restricted acts, listed alongside erotic asphyxiation. Critics pointed out that many of the restricted acts related to LGBT people, BDSM or expressions of female sexuality, and on 12 December 2014 a protest in Parliament Square organised by the campaigner Charlotte Rose included a mass demonstration of facesitting. The rules were later revised, and current prosecution guidance on obscene publications says prosecution is unlikely for material showing consensual activity that causes no serious harm.

The throne is the image. Breathing room is the rule.

The one rule that matters most

Breathing must never be restricted. Smothering, as Wikipedia defines it, is the mechanical obstruction of air flowing into the mouth or nostrils, and it can be fatal far faster than people expect. A 2021 review of 17 published BDSM deaths found that strangulation caused most of them, that drugs or alcohol were involved in 64.3%, and that the people who died were not new to BDSM; one death was caused by the mouth and nose being covered. The authors urged everyone to have an emergency plan. Facesitting must never become breath play, however the fantasy is framed or requested.

The law reflects this. In England and Wales, since June 2022, an act that affects another person's ability to breathe and amounts to a battery is a specific criminal offence, and consent is no defence where serious harm is intended or the person is reckless about it.

Safety rules

Our limits guide covers non-verbal signals and how to agree them.

The throne, without the risk

Much of what draws people to facesitting can be had without any risk at all, through throne role play. She sits on a raised chair; he kneels or lies at her feet. She uses him as a footstool, rests her hand on his head, or simply makes him wait at the foot of her throne while she ignores him. The power dynamic is identical, the closeness can still be intense, and breathing is never in question. Many couples find this version satisfies the fantasy completely, and some use it as the whole scene. It's also a good way to find out whether the appeal lies in the position, the closeness or the symbolism before trying anything more.

Facesitting on cam

On cam, facesitting is pure fantasy, and that makes it entirely safe. A performer can film from a low angle so she towers over the lens, sit on a throne-like chair, narrate the scene slowly, and make you feel exactly as small and as devoted as you like, with no physical risk at all. Few performers list facesitting by name; in our 5 October 2026 snapshot, just one of 31 did. Many more enjoy throne, worship and humiliation role play, so the strip at the top of this page shows those too. Ask politely, describe the scene you'd like, and let her take her seat. Many performers enjoy playing the queen on her throne, with you as the devoted subject at her feet, and the role play can be as gentle or as strict as you both like.

Our guide to humiliation cams covers the verbal side that often goes with it.

Quick answers

What is facesitting?

A sexual practice in which one partner sits over the other's face. Wikipedia notes it's also known as queening. In femdom it's a classic expression of power: she's above, literally, and he's beneath her.

What does queening mean?

Another name for facesitting. Green's Dictionary of Slang traces it to gay slang, from the word queenie, with its earliest recorded use in 1992. The popular queen-on-her-throne explanation is appealing but unproven.

Is facesitting safe?

Only if breathing is never blocked. A review of published BDSM deaths included one caused by the mouth and nose being covered. Keep weight off the face, the nose and mouth clear, sessions short, and a non-verbal stop signal agreed.

Why was facesitting restricted in UK porn rules?

In 2014 the UK applied its strictest film-classification rules to online pornography, and facesitting appeared among the restricted acts. Critics said the list targeted BDSM and female sexuality, and protesters staged a mass facesitting demonstration outside Parliament.

What's the most important facesitting safety rule?

Breathing is never restricted, not even briefly, not even as part of the game. In England and Wales, an act that affects someone's ability to breathe can also be a criminal offence, whatever was agreed.

How does facesitting work on cam?

As fantasy and role play. A performer can film from below so she towers over the camera, sit on a throne-like chair and describe the scene, all with no physical risk. Few list it by name, but many enjoy throne and worship role play.

Is facesitting the same as smothering?

No, and it must never become smothering. Smothering means blocking the airflow to the mouth and nose, which can kill. Safe facesitting keeps the nose and mouth clear and the weight off the face at all times.

What is a queening stool?

A low seat designed for facesitting, which lets the person above sit comfortably while keeping her weight on the seat rather than on her partner. It's one way to keep pressure off the face.

Why is facesitting popular in femdom?

Because it makes the power dynamic physical and unmistakable: she's above, he's beneath, and the position itself says who's in charge. For many submissives, the symbolism matters as much as anything else.

Can women be the ones underneath?

Yes. Facesitting isn't tied to any particular gender, and Wikipedia notes the practice also goes by other names. On this site we describe it in femdom terms, with the woman in the dominant position.
